What is Tapping?
Tapping, or EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a combination of gentle tapping on acupressure meridian points whilst addressing the negative issue that we would like to clear.
When our brains pick up danger signals, the Fight or Flight response is triggered producing the cortisol we need to get out of the situation to a place of safety. Whilst this is useful for situations of real, physical threat, our brains react in the same way when we perceive that something is a threat and when we are in this state it is impossible to think clearly or come up with creative solutions and alternatives. This is where Tapping is so powerful.
By tapping on the meridian points, whilst acknowledging and accepting any negative thoughts, unpleasant emotions and physical sensations we “short circuit” the power that they have. The alarm signal in our brain calms down, disrupting the pathway that associates this thought with Fight, Flight or Freeze. As cortisol levels drop and our mind becomes calmer, we can then explore the deeper issues in a more rational way, replacing the old negative association with something healthier and more supportive.
